Math tests Grade 5 : Multiplying and Dividing Fractions — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

1 Fractions as division / 3 pts

Write each quotient as a fraction, then as a mixed number if it is greater than 1.

  1. \(7 \div 3\)
  2. \(11 \div 4\)
  3. \(2 \div 9\)

2 Multiplying / 4 pts

Compute and simplify.

  1. \(6 \times \dfrac{3}{4}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{5}{6} \times \dfrac{9}{10}\)
  3. \(\dfrac{4}{9} \times \dfrac{3}{8}\)
  4. \(3\tfrac{1}{3} \times 1\tfrac{1}{5}\)

3 Scaling / 3 pts

Do not finish the multiplication for (a) and (b).

  1. Is \(\dfrac{5}{8} \times \dfrac{9}{7}\) greater or less than \(\dfrac{5}{8}\)? Explain.
  2. Is \(\dfrac{5}{8} \times \dfrac{3}{7}\) greater or less than \(\dfrac{5}{8}\)? Explain.
  3. Compute \(\dfrac{5}{8} \times \dfrac{9}{7}\).

4 Dividing with unit fractions / 3 pts

Divide.

  1. \(\dfrac{1}{5} \div 4\)
  2. \(7 \div \dfrac{1}{3}\)
  3. \(\dfrac{1}{9} \div 3\)

5 Flower bed / 4 pts

A flower bed is \(2\tfrac{1}{2}\) yards long and \(\dfrac{3}{4}\) yard wide.

  1. Find its area.
  2. Carrots grow on \(\dfrac{2}{5}\) of the bed. What area do carrots cover?

6 Bag of rice / 3 pts

A bag holds 8 pounds of rice. It is split into portions of \(\dfrac{1}{4}\) pound. Then \(\dfrac{3}{8}\) of the portions are given to neighbors.

  1. How many portions are made?
  2. How many portions go to the neighbors?
