Test solutions Grade 5 : Expressions and Patterns — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Test solutions with the detailed point scale. Add up your points and spot what to review.

Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

1 Evaluate / 4 pts

  1. \( 56 - 24 = 32 \) (1 pt)
  2. \( 8 + 12 = 20 \) (1 pt)
  3. \( 18 \div 3 = 6 \) (1 pt)
  4. \( 9 + 6 = 15 \); \( 30 - 15 = 15 \); \( 4 \times 15 = 60 \) (1 pt)

2 Writing expressions / 3 pts

  1. \( 2 \times (12 + 18) = 2 \times 30 = 60 \) (1 pt)
  2. \( 50 - 6 \times 4 = 50 - 24 = 26 \) (1 pt)
  3. \( 5 \times 8 - 3 = 40 - 3 = 37 \). There are 37 good pencils. (1 pt)

3 Interpreting / 3 pts

  1. It is 4 times as large. (1 pt)
  2. \( 210 + 90 \) is larger, because dividing by 3 makes the sum one third as large. (1 pt)
  3. \( 2 \times (50 - 14) = 2 \times 36 = 72 \) (1 pt)

4 Two patterns / 4 pts

  1. A: \( 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 \). B: \( 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 \). (2 pts)
  2. Each term of A is twice the matching term of B. (1 pt)
  3. A adds 6, which is \( 2 \times 3 \), so it grows twice as fast. (1 pt)

5 Ordered pairs / 3 pts

  1. A: \( 0, 4, 8, 12 \). B: \( 0, 12, 24, 36 \). Pairs: \( (0, 0),\ (4, 12),\ (8, 24),\ (12, 36) \). (2 pts)
  2. B is 3 times as large as A. (1 pt)

6 Reading a graph / 3 pts

  1. \( P(1, 4) \), \( Q(2, 8) \), \( R(3, 12) \). (1 pt)
  2. Each y-value is 4 times its x-value. (1 pt)
  3. \( y = 4 \times 5 = 20 \), so the point is \( (5, 20) \). (1 pt)
