Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

2 Writing expressions / 3 pts

Write an expression and evaluate it.

  1. Multiply the sum of 12 and 18 by 2.
  2. Subtract the product of 6 and 4 from 50.
  3. A store has 5 packs of 8 pencils. Three pencils are broken. How many good pencils are there?

3 Interpreting / 3 pts

  1. How many times as large as \( 82 - 37 \) is \( 4 \times (82 - 37) \)?
  2. Which is larger, \( (210 + 90) \div 3 \) or \( 210 + 90 \)? Do not calculate.
  3. Write “twice the difference of 50 and 14” as an expression and evaluate it.

4 Two patterns / 4 pts

Pattern A starts at 0 and adds 6. Pattern B starts at 0 and adds 3.

  1. Write the first five terms of each.
  2. How do the terms of A compare with the matching terms of B?
  3. Explain why.

5 Ordered pairs / 3 pts

Pattern A starts at 0 and adds 4. Pattern B starts at 0 and adds 12.

  1. Write the first four ordered pairs (A, B).
  2. How many times as large as A is B?

6 Reading a graph / 3 pts

The points P, Q and R come from two patterns.

1234564812162024PQR

  1. Write the ordered pairs of P, Q and R.
  2. Describe how y is related to x.
  3. A fourth point has x-coordinate 5 and follows the same rule. What is its y-coordinate?
