Test solutions Grade 5 : Multi-Digit Multiplication — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Test solutions with the detailed point scale. Add up your points and spot what to review.

Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

2 Multiples of 10 / 3 pts

a) \(8 \times 3 = 24\), so \(2{,}400\). (1 pt)

b) \(5 \times 6 = 30\), so \(30{,}000\). (1 pt)

c) \(4 \times 2 = 8\), so \(80{,}000\). (1 pt)

3 Estimating / 3 pts

a) \(70 \times 40 = 2{,}800\). (1 pt)

b) \(300 \times 30 = 9{,}000\). (1 pt)

c) Yes, 2,788 is very close to the estimate 2,800. (1 pt)

4 Area model / 4 pts

\(20 \times 30 = 600\), \(7 \times 30 = 210\), \(20 \times 4 = 80\), \(7 \times 4 = 28\). (2 pts)

Sum: \(600 + 210 + 80 + 28 = 918\). (1 pt)

So \(27 \times 34 = 918\). (1 pt)

5 Standard algorithm / 4 pts

a) \(64 \times 3 = 192\), \(64 \times 50 = 3{,}200\), total \(3{,}392\). (2 pts)

b) \(238 \times 6 = 1{,}428\), \(238 \times 40 = 9{,}520\), total \(10{,}948\). (2 pts)

6 Stadium seats / 3 pts

a) \(40 \times 140 = 5{,}600\) (or \(40 \times 100 = 4{,}000\) as a rough value). (1 pt)

b) \(135 \times 2 = 270\), \(135 \times 40 = 5{,}400\), total \(5{,}670\). (1 pt)

c) The stadium has 5,670 seats. (1 pt)
