Math tests Grade 7 : Adding and Subtracting Integers — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

1 Opposites and absolute value / 3 pts

(a) Write the opposite of \( -13 \) and of \( 4.5 \). (b) Find \( |-21| \) and \( |17| \). (c) Which number is farther from 0, \( -15 \) or \( 12 \)?

2 Adding and subtracting / 4 pts

Compute: (a) \( -9 + (-6) \) (b) \( 14 + (-20) \) (c) \( 7 - 12 \) (d) \( -3 - (-11) \).

3 Distances / 4 pts

(a) Find the distance between \( -8 \) and 6. (b) Find the distance between \( -13 \) and \( -5 \). (c) A point is 7 units from \( -2 \). Find both possible positions.

4 A day of weather / 4 pts

At 8 a.m. the temperature is \( -6^\circ\text{F} \). It rises 11 degrees by noon, then falls 16 degrees by midnight. (a) Temperature at noon? (b) Temperature at midnight? (c) How many degrees colder is midnight than 8 a.m.?

5 Rational numbers / 3 pts

Compute: (a) \( -1.5 + (-2.75) \) (b) \( 0.8 - (-2.2) \) (c) \( -\dfrac{1}{2} + \dfrac{3}{4} \).

6 True or false / 2 pts

Say whether each statement is true or false and justify. (a) The sum of an integer and its opposite is always 0. (b) If \( a < b \), then \( a - b \) is positive.
