Practice solutions Kindergarten : Comparing Numbers — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.

2 Cups and plates ★★★

Count up: 3, 4, 5. The number 3 comes before 5, so 3 is less than 5.

Answer: there are fewer cups.

3 Which is greater? ★★★

Counting up from 3 we say 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. We reach 8 after 3, so 8 is greater.

Answer: 8 is greater than 3, so \( 8 \gt 3 \).

4 Pick the word ★★★

  1. The two numbers are the same: 5 is equal to 5, \( 5 = 5 \).
  2. 2 comes before 9: 2 is less than 9, \( 2 \lt 9 \).
  3. 7 comes after 4: 7 is greater than 4, \( 7 \gt 4 \).

5 True or false? ★★★

  1. True. 4 comes before 6.
  2. False. 9 and 8 are different; 9 is greater than 8.
  3. True. 10 is the last number of our line and 1 is the first.

6 Look at the number line ★★★

P is at 2 and Q is at 7. Point Q is farther to the right.

Answer: 7 is greater than 2, so \( 7 \gt 2 \).

7 Ten or six? ★★★

Count up from 6: 7, 8, 9, 10. We reach 10 after 6.

Answer: 10 is greater, \( 10 \gt 6 \).

8 Fill in the symbol ★★★

  1. 6 is before 8: \( 6 \lt 8 \).
  2. 9 is after 3: \( 9 \gt 3 \).
  3. The numbers are the same: \( 5 = 5 \).
  4. 1 is the first number and 10 is the last: \( 1 \lt 10 \).

9 Sticker swap ★★★

Count from 7 to 9: 8, 9. That is 2 steps, so the difference is 2. Since 9 is greater than 7, Leo has more.

Answer: Leo has more, he has 2 more stickers than Maya.

10 Birds on the roof ★★★

Compare 8 and 5: \( 5 \lt 8 \), so the roof has fewer birds. From 5 up to 8 we count 6, 7, 8, which is 3 steps.

Answer: there are fewer birds on the roof, 3 fewer.

11 Big or many? ★★★

We compare 4 and 6, not the size. Four comes before six, so \( 4 \lt 6 \).

Answer: Ina has more objects. The size does not change how many there are.

12 Numbers greater than 7 ★★★

We look at the numbers after 7 on the number line: 8, 9, 10.

Answer: 8, 9 and 10.

13 Order three numbers ★★★

The least is 4. Then 6. The greatest is 9.

Answer: 4, 6, 9, and we can write \( 4 \lt 6 \lt 9 \).

14 Make the groups equal ★★★

After matching, 3 oranges have no partner. Count from 5 to 8: 6, 7, 8, that is 3 more apples.

Answer: we add 3 apples. Then \( 5 + 3 = 8 \) and both bowls are equal.

15 Order four numbers ★★★

  1. The least is 3, then 5, then 8, and 10 is the greatest: 3, 5, 8, 10.
  2. We reverse the list: 10, 8, 5, 3.

16 Mystery number ★★★

Numbers greater than 6 and less than 9 are 7 and 8. The clue says it is not 7.

Answer: my number is 8, because \( 6 \lt 8 \lt 9 \).

17 Three baskets ★★★

  1. The greatest number is 9: basket C.
  2. The least number is 5: basket B.
  3. 5 \( \lt \) 7 \( \lt \) 9, so the order is B, A, C.

18 Find the mistake ★★★

No. We compare how many, not how the number looks. Counting up, 4 comes before 7, so 4 is less than 7.

Answer: Sam made a mistake; the true sentence is \( 4 \lt 7 \) (or \( 7 \gt 4 \)).

19 Same or different? ★★★

  1. Ava and Ben both have 6: \( 6 = 6 \).
  2. Ben has 6 and Cy has 8: \( 6 \lt 8 \).
  3. 8 is the greatest, so Cy has the most.

20 Tower race ★★★

  1. Towers B and D both have 7 blocks: \( 7 = 7 \).
  2. Tower A has only 3 blocks, the least.
  3. The heights are 3, 5, 7, 7: 3, 5, 7, 7.
