Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.

2 Which hand is which? ★★★

The short hand is the hour hand. It tells the hour. The long hand tells the minutes.

3 Half past ★★★

The long hand points to 6, so it is half past. The short hand is between 7 and 8, so the hour is 7.

It is half past 7, written 7:30.

4 Say the digital time ★★★

9:00 has 00 minutes, so it is 9 o’clock.

9:30 has 30 minutes, so it is half past 9.

5 Block sort ★★★

(a) There are 3 categories: green, orange and purple.

(b) \(3 + 5 + 2 = 10\). There are 10 blocks in all.

6 Count the tally ★★★

One group of 5 and 2 more marks: \(5 + 2 = 7\).

Zoe counted 7 stickers.

7 Fruit bars ★★★

(a) The pear bar reaches 6. 6 kids chose pear.

(b) The plum bar is the shortest, at 2. Plum has the fewest votes.

8 Hour or minute? ★★★

Long hand on 12 means an o’clock time, so it is 11 o’clock, or 11:00.

At half past 11, the long hand points to the 6.

9 One hour later ★★★

One hour after 5:00 is 6:00. The hour hand moves from 5 to 6.

The lesson ends at 6:00.

10 Half an hour later ★★★

(a) Half an hour after 3:00 is 3:30.

(b) From 8:30, half an hour more brings us to the next o’clock: 9:00.

11 Morning and noon ★★★

8:00 comes before 12:00, so school starts first.

Count the hours: 9, 10, 11, 12. That is 4 hours. \(12 - 8 = 4\). There are 4 hours between them.

12 Pet survey chart ★★★

Counting each word: dog 5, cat 3, fish 2.

Check: \(5 + 3 + 2 = 10\).

5 dogs, 3 cats and 2 fish.

13 Weather bars ★★★

(a) Sunny is 8 and rainy is 3: \(8 - 3 = 5\). There are 5 more sunny days.

(b) Cloudy is 5 and rainy is 3: \(5 - 3 = 2\). There are 2 fewer rainy days.

14 Button box ★★★

Round and square together: \(5 + 4 = 9\).

Stars: \(11 - 9 = 2\). There are 2 star buttons.

15 Reading a story ★★★

From 4:30 to 5:30 the hour hand moves one number, so he read for 1 hour.

Half an hour after 4:30 is 5:00.

16 True or false? ★★★

False. At 6:30 the long hand is on 6 and half an hour has passed. So the short hand has moved halfway between 6 and 7. It is not exactly on the 6.

17 Bird picture graph ★★★

(a) \(6 + 4 + 2 = 12\). Ana saw 12 birds.

(b) Robins and crows: \(6 + 2 = 8\). Sparrows: 4. Since 8 is more than 4, there were more robins and crows together, and \(8 - 4 = 4\). There were 4 more.

18 Recess choices ★★★

Soccer and tag: \(5 + 4 = 9\). Biking: \(12 - 9 = 3\). 3 children chose biking.

The numbers are 5, 4 and 3. The biggest is 5, so soccer is the favorite.

19 Missing votes ★★★

Red and blue: \(6 + 5 = 11\). Green: \(15 - 11 = 4\). 4 kids voted green.

Compare with red: \(6 - 4 = 2\). 2 fewer kids voted green than red.

20 Lunch tally ★★★

Pizza has 5 + 4 = 9, soup has 4, salad has 5 + 1 = 6.

(a) \(9 + 4 + 6 = 19\). 19 kids voted.

(b) Pizza and soup: \(9 + 4 = 13\). Salad: 6. \(13 - 6 = 7\). Yes, 7 more.

21 Morning plan ★★★

(a) From 7:00 to 8:00 is 1 hour.

(b) From 7:30 to 8:00 is half an hour, or 30 minutes.
