Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.
1 Name the flat shape ★★★
- 3 sides and 3 corners: it is a triangle.
- Round with no corners: it is a circle.
- 4 equal sides and 4 square corners: it is a square.
2 Count sides and corners ★★★
We count the straight edges and the points.
| Shape | Sides | Corners |
|---|---|---|
| triangle | 3 | 3 |
| rectangle | 4 | 4 |
| circle | 0 | 0 |
A circle is round, so it has 0 sides and 0 corners.
3 Solids in real life ★★★
- A soccer ball is round all over: sphere.
- A can of corn has two circle faces: cylinder.
- A number die has 6 square faces: cube.
- A party hat has one circle face and a point: cone.
4 True or false: circles ★★★
It is false. A circle is round all the way around. It has no straight sides and no corners, so it has 0 corners.
5 Which sandwich shows halves? ★★★
Sandwich A is cut into halves. Its two pieces are exactly the same size. In sandwich B one piece is bigger than the other, so those pieces are not halves.
6 Fill in the words ★★★
- 2 equal shares are called halves (one share is a half).
- 4 equal shares are called fourths.
- 2 halves make one whole.
7 Pizza shares ★★★
- The pizza is cut into 4 equal shares.
- 1 share is colored.
- The colored share is one fourth (or one quarter) of the pizza.
8 Riddle time ★★★
- 4 equal sides and 4 square corners: a square.
- 4 sides, two long and two short: a rectangle.
- A solid with 6 square faces: a cube.
9 Two triangles ★★★
Put the two triangles together along the long side. They make a rectangle (or a square if the sides match). The new shape has 4 sides and 4 square corners.
10 Two squares ★★★
Two squares side by side make a long shape with 4 sides and 4 square corners. It is a rectangle, and it has 4 sides.
11 Which solids roll? ★★★
A sphere rolls because it is round all over. A cylinder rolls on its curved side. A cube cannot roll because it has only flat square faces.
12 Sharing crackers ★★★
- Make 2 equal groups: \(6 + 6 = 12\). Each friend gets 6 crackers.
- Make 4 equal groups: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\). Each friend gets 3 crackers.
With more friends, each share is smaller.
13 Are these fourths? ★★★
Noah is not right. The 4 pieces have different widths, so they are not equal shares. Fourths must be 4 equal shares.
14 Half or fourth? ★★★
One half is bigger. A half comes from cutting the pie in 2 equal shares. A fourth comes from cutting in 4 equal shares, so each fourth is smaller.
15 Square in 4 shares ★★★
There are many ways. Here are three of them.
Way 1: one line down the middle and one across the middle. Way 2: two lines from corner to corner. Way 3: three lines down to make 4 strips. In every way, the 4 shares have exactly the same size, so each share is one fourth.
16 Build a tower ★★★
- \(2 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 7\). There are 7 solids.
- \(2 + 3 = 5\). 5 solids are cubes or cylinders.
17 Find the whole ★★★
- Two halves make the whole: \(5 + 5 = 10\). The ribbon is 10 cubes long.
- Four fourths make the whole: \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\). The ribbon is 12 cubes long.
18 Pie problem ★★★
- \(1 + 2 = 3\). They ate 3 shares.
- \(4 - 3 = 1\). 1 share is left.
- Each share is one fourth of the pie, so one fourth is left.
19 Same four squares ★★★
- Shape A is a big square. It has 4 equal sides and 4 square corners.
- Shape B is a rectangle that is not a square. It is long, with 2 long sides and 2 short sides.
The same 4 squares can make different shapes.
20 Find the mistake ★★★
Ben is not right. A triangle is a flat shape with 3 sides and 3 corners. A cone is a solid shape with a circle face and a curved surface. You can hold a cone, but a triangle drawn on paper is flat.
