Math tests Grade 6 : Integers and Rational Numbers — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

1 Opposites and absolute values / 3 pts

  1. Give the opposite of \( -13 \) and of \( 6.4 \).
  2. Find \( |-18| \) and \( |\dfrac{7}{2}| \).
  3. Which has the greater absolute value, \( -9 \) or \( 6 \)? Which number is greater?

2 Ordering rational numbers / 4 pts

  1. Order from least to greatest: \( -2.4,\ 1.8,\ -3,\ -\dfrac{1}{2},\ 0,\ \dfrac{5}{4} \).
  2. Compare \( -\dfrac{5}{6} \) and \( -\dfrac{7}{8} \) and justify.

3 Temperatures in context / 3 pts

A freezer is set at \( -12^\circ\text{F} \) and a refrigerator at \( 38^\circ\text{F} \).

  1. How many degrees warmer is the refrigerator?
  2. A cold room is at \( -5^\circ\text{F} \). Is it warmer or colder than the freezer?
  3. Overnight the outdoor temperature fell from \( 9^\circ\text{F} \) to \( -4^\circ\text{F} \). By how much did it fall?

4 Points and a rectangle / 4 pts

Points: E\( (-3, 4) \), F\( (5, 4) \), G\( (5, -2) \), H\( (-6, -3) \).

  1. Name the quadrant of E, G and H.
  2. Find EF.
  3. Find FG.
  4. E, F and G are three vertices of a rectangle. Find the fourth vertex.

5 Reflections / 4 pts

  1. Reflect \( M(-7, 2) \) across the x-axis and across the y-axis.
  2. Reflect \( P(4, -3) \) across the x-axis, then find the distance between P and its image.

6 True or false? / 2 pts

Decide and justify: (a) \( -15 \gt -4 \). (b) \( |-6| = |6| \).
