Practice solutions Grade 2 : Place Value to 1,000 — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.

2 What is each digit worth? ★★★

The 6 is in the hundreds place: it is worth 600. The 1 is in the tens place: it is worth 10. The 8 is in the ones place: it is worth 8.

The values are 600, 10 and 8.

3 Write the number ★★★

Put 7 in the hundreds place, 0 in the tens place and 3 in the ones place.

The number is 703. The 0 holds the tens place.

4 Expanded form ★★★

4 hundreds is 400, 5 tens is 50 and 9 ones is 9.

\(459 = 400 + 50 + 9\)

5 From words to digits ★★★

“Five hundred” gives 5 in the hundreds place. “Twelve” is 1 ten and 2 ones.

The number is 512.

6 Count by 10s ★★★

Add 10 each time: \(140 + 10 = 150\), \(150 + 10 = 160\), \(160 + 10 = 170\).

130, 140, 150, 160, 170.

7 Write in words ★★★

340 is 3 hundreds and 4 tens, with no ones.

Three hundred forty.

8 From expanded form ★★★

  1. 6 hundreds, 2 tens, 5 ones: 625.
  2. 9 hundreds, no tens, 9 ones: 909.
  3. 5 hundreds, 7 tens, no ones: 570.

9 Count by 5s ★★★

Add 5 each time: 285, 290, 295, and then \(295 + 5 = 300\).

275, 280, 285, 290, 295, 300. Notice that the hundreds digit changes at 300.

10 Count by 100s ★★★

Each jump adds 1 hundred, so only the hundreds digit goes up.

236, 336, 436, 536, 636. The next four numbers are 336, 436, 536 and 636.

11 How many tens? ★★★

a) 340 is 3 hundreds and 4 tens. Each hundred is 10 tens, so \(30 + 4 = 34\) tens. 34 tens.

b) 507 is 5 hundreds, which is 50 tens, and 0 more tens, with 7 ones left over. 50 tens and 7 ones.

12 Three ways ★★★

  1. \(400 + 10 + 3 = 413\). This is the standard way.
  2. \(413 - 300 - 3 = 110\), and 110 is 11 tens. 3 hundreds, 11 tens, 3 ones: \(300 + 110 + 3 = 413\).
  3. \(413 - 3 = 410\), and 410 is 41 tens. 41 tens, 3 ones.

13 True or false? ★★★

  1. True. The tens digit of 905 is 0, so there are 0 tens.
  2. False. The first 5 is in the hundreds place and is worth 500. The second 5 is in the tens place and is worth only 50.

14 The library boxes ★★★

6 boxes is 600 books, 3 bundles is 30 books and 8 single books is 8 books.

\(600 + 30 + 8 = 638\)

The library has 638 books.

15 Garden flowers ★★★

25 rows of 10 flowers is 25 tens, or 250.

Counting by 10s: 10, 20, 30, ... , 240, 250 (25 jumps).

She plants 250 flowers.

16 Mystery number ★★★

The tens digit is twice 3, which is 6. The digits are 5, 6 and 3.

The number is 563. Check: hundreds 5, tens 6 = \(2 \times 3\), ones 3.

17 Largest and smallest ★★★

A three-digit number cannot start with 0. The possible numbers are 407, 470, 704 and 740.

The largest is 740 and the smallest is 407.

18 Trading blocks ★★★

  1. \(200 + 130 + 5 = 335\). Mia has 335.
  2. 10 rods trade for 1 flat. Now she has 3 flats and 3 rods left, plus 5 cubes. 3 flats, 3 rods and 5 cubes: \(300 + 30 + 5 = 335\).

19 Find the mistake ★★★

After 690 comes \(690 + 10 = 700\), not 800. Ten tens trade up to 1 hundred, so the hundreds digit goes from 6 to 7, not from 6 to 8. Leo skipped 700.

Correct list: 670, 680, 690, 700, 710.

20 Points on a number line ★★★

a) A = 320, B = 350, C = 380.

b) C is the closest to 400. \(400 - 380 = 20\), so C is 20 away from 400.

21 Bags of rolls ★★★

36 bags of 10 rolls is 36 tens, which is 360. Then \(360 + 8 = 368\).

The bakery has 368 rolls: three hundred sixty-eight.

22 Reaching 1,000 ★★★

a) 10 hundreds make 1,000. Each hundred is 10 tens, so \(10 \times 10 = 100\) tens make 1,000.

b) \(999 + 1 = 1{,}000\), one thousand.

c) 600, 700, 800, 900, 1,000.
