Practice solutions Grade 1 : Numbers to 10 and Counting — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.

2 Write the numeral ★★★

  1. seven is 7.
  2. zero is 0.
  3. ten is 10.
  4. four is 4.

3 Count forward ★★★

Counting forward, each number is one more. After 4 comes 5. After 6 comes 7.

The sequence is 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

4 Count backward ★★★

Counting backward, each number is one less. One less than 8 is 7. One less than 6 is 5.

The sequence is 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4.

5 Which group has more? ★★★

Group A has 5 circles. Group B has 3 circles. Since 5 is greater than 3, Group A has more. Group B has fewer.

6 Greater, less, or equal ★★★

  1. 6 is greater than 2, so \(6 \gt 2\).
  2. 4 is less than 9, so \(4 \lt 9\).
  3. 8 and 8 are the same, so \(8 = 8\).

7 Match words and numerals ★★★

  1. 5 is five.
  2. 9 is nine.
  3. 2 is two.
  4. 8 is eight.

8 Read the number line ★★★

  1. Point A is at 3.
  2. Point B is at 8.
  3. 8 is farther to the right, and \(8 \gt 3\). So point B shows the greater number.

9 Least to greatest ★★★

The least is 2. Then 4, then 7. The greatest is 9.

The order is 2, 4, 7, 9.

10 Greatest to least ★★★

The greatest is 10. Then 5, then 3. The least is 0.

The order is 10, 5, 3, 0.

11 Stickers at recess ★★★

  1. \(8 \gt 6\), so Maya has more.
  2. \(6 \lt 8\), so Leo has fewer.
  3. Count backward from 8: 8, 7, 6. That is 2 steps, so Maya has 2 more stickers.

12 True or false? ★★★

  1. False. 3 is less than 7, so \(3 \lt 7\).
  2. True. 10 comes after 9 when counting forward.
  3. True. Zero comes before 1.
  4. False. 5 and 6 are different numbers, so \(5 \lt 6\).

13 One more, one less ★★★

  1. One less is 5 and one more is 7. So 5 and 7.
  2. One less is 8 and one more is 10.
  3. One less is 0 and one more is 2.
  4. One less is 9. One more would be 11, but we only count to 10 here, so the answer is just 9.

14 Write the words ★★★

  1. 3 is three.
  2. 8 is eight.
  3. 10 is ten.
  4. 0 is zero.

15 Between 7 and 10 ★★★

Numbers greater than 7 are 8, 9, and 10. Numbers less than 10 are 0 up to 9.

Both are true for 8 and 9. The number 10 is not less than 10, so we leave it out.

16 Mystery numbers ★★★

  1. Only 8 is between 7 and 9. The number is 8.
  2. Counting forward, 9 comes right before 10. The number is 9.
  3. One less than 4 is 3.

17 Grapes on the ten frames ★★★

  1. \(9 \gt 7\), so Ana has more grapes.
  2. Ben has 3 empty boxes and Ana has 1 empty box. Count up from 7: 8, 9. That is 2 steps, so Ben has 2 fewer grapes.

18 Find the mistake ★★★

Sam is not right. The number 4 is less than 5, so 4 must come before 5.

The correct order is 2, 4, 5, 8.

19 Rocket countdown ★★★

  1. The numbers are 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.
  2. Count them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. We say 7 numbers. Do not forget zero!

20 Three cards ★★★

3 is the least, 5 is in the middle, and 8 is the greatest. Three true comparisons are:

\(3 \lt 5\), \(5 \lt 8\), and \(8 \gt 3\).

Other correct answers are possible, like \(5 \gt 3\).

21 Make the groups equal ★★★

  1. Group A has 4 and Group B has 7. Since \(4 \lt 7\), Group A has fewer.
  2. Count up from 4 to 7: 5, 6, 7. That is 3 steps, so add 3 circles. Then both groups have 7.
