Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.
1 Name the coin ★★★
- A dime is worth 10¢.
- A penny is worth 1¢.
- A quarter is worth 25¢.
- A nickel is worth 5¢.
Remember: size does not tell the value.
2 Counting one kind of coin ★★★
- 10, 20, 30, 40. So 4 dimes are worth 40¢.
- 5, 10, 15. So 3 nickels are worth 15¢.
- 25, 50. So 2 quarters are worth 50¢.
3 Read an o’clock time ★★★
The short hand points to the 4 and the long hand points to the 12. The time is 4:00, four o’clock.
4 Half past ★★★
The long hand is on the 6, so it is half past the hour: 30 minutes. The hour hand is between the 8 and the 9, so the hour is 8. The time is 8:30.
5 Nickels in a row ★★★
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. Mia has 30¢.
6 Dollars and cents ★★★
- 1 dollar = 100¢.
- \(3 \times 100 = 300\), so 3 dollars = 300¢.
- $1.50.
7 a.m. or p.m.? ★★★
- 7:30 a.m. (morning)
- 8:30 p.m. (night)
- 4:00 p.m. (afternoon)
- 6:45 a.m. (morning)
8 Mixed coins ★★★
Start with the greatest value: 25, 35, 45, 50, 51, 52, 53.
\(25 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 53\). Ben has 53¢.
9 Count the coins in the picture ★★★
Two quarters: 25, 50. One dime: 60. Two nickels: 65, 70.
\(25 + 25 + 10 + 5 + 5 = 70\). The coins are worth 70¢.
10 Read the minutes ★★★
The minute hand points to the 7. Count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. The hour hand is past the 2 but not yet at the 3. The time is 2:35.
11 Cents to dollars ★★★
- \(145 = 100 + 45\), so it is $1.45.
- Use a zero to hold the place: $2.07.
- $3.20 is 3 dollars and 20 cents: \(300 + 20 = 320\), so 320¢.
12 Buying a sticker ★★★
Subtract to find what is left: \(60 - 35 = 25\).
Lena has 25¢ left.
13 Write the time ★★★
- Half past nine is 30 minutes after 9: 9:30.
- Quarter past two is 15 minutes after 2: 2:15.
- 7:25.
- Use a zero for the tens: 11:10.
14 True or false? ★★★
- True. \(10 + 10 + 5 = 25\), and a quarter is 25¢.
- False. 5 pennies are \(5 \times 1 = 5\)¢, the same as 1 nickel. They are equal, not more.
15 Fewest coins ★★★
Use the largest coin that fits each time. Take 1 quarter: 25¢. Left: \(41 - 25 = 16\). Take 1 dime: 10¢. Left: 6. Take 1 nickel: 5¢. Left: 1. Take 1 penny.
\(25 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 41\). The fewest coins is 4 coins: a quarter, a dime, a nickel, and a penny.
16 Ways to make 30 cents ★★★
Try the number of dimes: 3, 2, 1, or 0.
| Dimes | Nickels | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 0 | 30¢ |
| 2 | 2 | 20 + 10 = 30¢ |
| 1 | 4 | 10 + 20 = 30¢ |
| 0 | 6 | 30¢ |
There are 4 ways.
17 How much change? ★★★
Two one-dollar bills are 200¢. The toy costs $1.40, which is 140¢.
\(200 - 140 = 60\). Omar gets 60¢ in change.
18 Enough money? ★★★
Three quarters: 25, 50, 75. Two dimes: 85, 95. Jack has 95¢.
\(95 - 90 = 5\). Yes, he has enough, and 5¢ is left.
19 The movie starts ★★★
One hour later, the hour goes up by 1 and the minutes stay the same: 2:15 becomes 3:15.
The movie ends at 3:15 p.m.
20 Find the mistake ★★★
The student mixed up the hands. The short hand shows the hour: it is between the 5 and the 6, so the hour is 5. The long hand shows the minutes: it points to the 9, and \(9 \times 5 = 45\).
The right time is 5:45.
21 Piggy bank puzzle ★★★
Test the number of dimes. With 4 dimes there are 3 nickels: \(4 \times 10 = 40\) and \(3 \times 5 = 15\). \(40 + 15 = 55\) and \(4 + 3 = 7\).
Sam has 4 dimes and 3 nickels.
