  2. One part when a ribbon is cut into 6 equal parts.
  3. Three pieces, each of size \(\dfrac{1}{4}\).

3 Shade the fractions ★★★

A strip is cut into 8 equal parts. You color \(\dfrac{3}{8}\) of it.

  1. How many parts do you color?
  2. How many parts stay white? What fraction of the strip is white?

4 Read a number line ★★★

The number line from 0 to 1 is cut into 4 equal lengths.

01AB

Write the fraction for point A and the fraction for point B.

5 Which piece is bigger? ★★★

Two friends cut sheets of paper of the same size. Ines cuts hers into 3 equal parts and Theo cuts his into 6 equal parts. Each keeps one part.

  1. Who has the bigger piece?
  2. Compare \(\dfrac{1}{2}\) and \(\dfrac{1}{8}\) with > or <.

6 Whole numbers as fractions ★★★

Write the number 1 as a fraction with denominator 4, then with denominator 8, then with denominator 6. Then write \(\dfrac{5}{1}\) as a whole number.

7 True or false? ★★★

Say whether each sentence is true or false, and explain.

  1. \(\dfrac{3}{3}\) is equal to one whole.
  2. A square is cut into 4 pieces of different sizes. Each piece is \(\dfrac{1}{4}\) of the square.
  3. \(\dfrac{1}{5}\) is greater than \(\dfrac{1}{4}\).

8 Same denominator ★★★

Compare with >, < or =.

  1. \(\dfrac{4}{6}\) and \(\dfrac{2}{6}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{5}{8}\) and \(\dfrac{7}{8}\)

Then put these fractions in order from least to greatest: \(\dfrac{3}{6},\ \dfrac{5}{6},\ \dfrac{1}{6},\ \dfrac{4}{6}\).

9 Same numerator ★★★

Compare with >, < or =, and say which rule you use.

  1. \(\dfrac{3}{4}\) and \(\dfrac{3}{8}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{5}{6}\) and \(\dfrac{5}{8}\)

Order from least to greatest: \(\dfrac{2}{3},\ \dfrac{2}{6},\ \dfrac{2}{4}\).

10 Equal or not? ★★★

Look at the bars. They have the same length.

2/34/6

  1. Are \(\dfrac{2}{3}\) and \(\dfrac{4}{6}\) equal? Explain with the picture.
  2. Fill in the blanks: \(\dfrac{1}{2} = \dfrac{\ ?\ }{6}\) and \(\dfrac{3}{4} = \dfrac{\ ?\ }{8}\).

11 Fractions beyond 1 ★★★

A number line from 0 to 2 has each unit cut into thirds.

012PQ

  1. Name the fractions at P and at Q.
  2. Which point is closer to 2?
