5 True or false? ★★★

Say whether each statement is true or false and explain why.

  1. \(\dfrac{2}{4}=\dfrac{1}{2}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{3}{6}=\dfrac{1}{3}\)
  3. \(\dfrac{4}{10}=\dfrac{2}{5}\)
  4. \(\dfrac{2}{3}=\dfrac{3}{4}\)

6 Same denominator or same numerator ★★★

Write \(\lt\), \(\gt\) or \(=\) in each blank.

  1. \(\dfrac{2}{5}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{4}{5}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{6}{6}\ \_\_\ 1\)
  3. \(\dfrac{1}{3}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{1}{8}\)
  4. \(\dfrac{5}{8}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{3}{8}\)

7 Above or below one half ★★★

Sort these fractions into three groups: less than \(\dfrac{1}{2}\), equal to \(\dfrac{1}{2}\), greater than \(\dfrac{1}{2}\).

\(\dfrac{3}{8}\), \(\dfrac{5}{6}\), \(\dfrac{4}{8}\), \(\dfrac{2}{5}\), \(\dfrac{7}{12}\), \(\dfrac{1}{10}\)

8 Two equivalent fractions ★★★

Write two fractions equivalent to each fraction.

  1. \(\dfrac{3}{4}\) (use denominators 8 and 12)
  2. \(\dfrac{2}{5}\) (use denominators 10 and 100)

9 Simplify ★★★

Write each fraction in simplest form.

  1. \(\dfrac{6}{8}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{10}{12}\)
  3. \(\dfrac{8}{12}\)
  4. \(\dfrac{25}{100}\)

10 Oatmeal scoops ★★★

A recipe for oatmeal cookies needs \(\dfrac{2}{3}\) cup of oats. Lena only has a small scoop that holds \(\dfrac{1}{6}\) cup. How many level scoops of oats does she need? How many scoops would she need for \(\dfrac{1}{3}\) cup?

11 Fractions with unlike denominators ★★★

Compare with \(\lt\), \(\gt\) or \(=\). Show your common denominator.

  1. \(\dfrac{2}{3}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{3}{4}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{3}{5}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{7}{10}\)
  3. \(\dfrac{5}{6}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{3}{4}\)
  4. \(\dfrac{3}{8}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{1}{4}\)

12 Two number lines ★★★

The number lines show points A, B, C and D.

01/42/43/41AB01/82/83/84/85/86/87/81CD

  1. Write a fraction for each of A, B, C and D.
  2. Which two points sit at the same place? Write the equivalent fractions.
  3. Is D to the left or the right of B? Complete: \(\dfrac{5}{8}\ \_\_\ \dfrac{3}{4}\).

13 Who ran farther? ★★★

During gym class Leo ran \(\dfrac{3}{4}\) of a mile and Sara ran \(\dfrac{5}{8}\) of a mile. Who ran farther, and by how much?

14 Least to greatest ★★★

Order these fractions from least to greatest: \(\dfrac{1}{2}\), \(\dfrac{1}{3}\), \(\dfrac{1}{6}\), \(\dfrac{5}{6}\).

15 Find the unknown number ★★★

Find the missing number.

  1. \(\dfrac{4}{5}=\dfrac{?}{100}\)
  2. \(\dfrac{9}{12}=\dfrac{?}{4}\)
  3. \(\dfrac{3}{8}=\dfrac{9}{?}\)
  4. \(\dfrac{21}{?}=\dfrac{7}{10}\)

16 Find the mistake ★★★

Ben says: "\(\dfrac{2}{3}=\dfrac{4}{5}\) because I added 2 to the top and 2 to the bottom." Is Ben right? Explain. Then write a correct fraction equivalent to \(\dfrac{2}{3}\) with a denominator of 6, and say which of \(\dfrac{2}{3}\) and \(\dfrac{4}{5}\) is greater.

17 Which equal one half? ★★★

Circle every fraction equal to \(\dfrac{1}{2}\) and explain how you know: \(\dfrac{5}{10}\), \(\dfrac{6}{12}\), \(\dfrac{4}{9}\), \(\dfrac{50}{100}\), \(\dfrac{3}{5}\). For each other fraction, say if it is less than or greater than \(\dfrac{1}{2}\).
