Suggested time: 45 minutes. Out of 20 points. Calculator allowed only when the problem says so.

1 Place value and words / 3 pts

Consider the number \(80.036\).

  1. Write it in words. (1 pt)
  2. Give the value of the digit 6 and of the digit 3. (1 pt)
  3. The value of the 3 is how many times the value of the 6? Careful: compare \(0.03\) with \(0.006\). (1 pt)

2 Powers of 10 / 3 pts

  1. Write \(10{,}000\) using an exponent. (1 pt)
  2. Write \(10^6\) in standard form. (1 pt)
  3. Write \(5 \times 10^3\) in standard form. (1 pt)

3 Powers of 10 and the decimal point / 4 pts

Calculate without a calculator.

  1. \(0.74 \times 10^2\) (1 pt)
  2. \(6.2 \times 10^3\) (1 pt)
  3. \(915 \div 10^2\) (1 pt)
  4. \(3.6 \div 10^3\) (1 pt)

4 Expanded form / 3 pts

  1. Write \(52.407\) in expanded form. (2 pts)
  2. Write \(3 \times 100 + 1 \times 1 + 8 \times 0.01 + 5 \times 0.001\) in standard form. (1 pt)

5 Comparing and rounding / 4 pts

  1. Compare \(2.608\) and \(2.68\) with \(<\), \(>\) or \(=\). (1 pt)
  2. Order from least to greatest: \(0.35\), \(0.305\), \(0.5\), \(0.053\). (1 pt)
  3. Round \(18.2649\) to the nearest tenth, then to the nearest hundredth. (2 pts)

6 Bakery problem / 3 pts

A bakery uses \(0.45\) kg of sugar for one batch of cookies.

  1. How many kilograms of sugar are needed for \(10^2\) batches? (1 pt)
  2. Convert that amount to grams. (1 pt)
  3. That amount is shared equally into \(10^3\) jars. How many kilograms go in each jar? (1 pt)
