Practice solutions Kindergarten : Measurement, Sorting and Data — Zyro the alien explorer of Planète Maths

Written solutions to the chapter problems. Check each step, then correct yourself.

2 Which tower is the tallest? ★★★

The green tower has 5 cubes. It reaches the highest, so it is the tallest. The blue tower has only 2 cubes, so it is the shortest.

3 Heavier or lighter? ★★★

The scale goes down on the pumpkin side. The pumpkin is heavier. The apple is lighter.

4 Sort the buttons by color ★★★

The red group has 3 buttons. The blue group has 2 buttons. The yellow group has 4 buttons.

5 Pick the right word ★★★

  1. A giraffe is taller than a cat (height).
  2. The 10 cube rope is longer (length).
  3. A rock is heavier than a leaf (weight).

6 Count the shapes ★★★

There are 5 circles and 3 squares. \(5 + 3 = 8\). There are 8 shapes in all.

7 Read the pet graph ★★★

Dogs have 4 circles, the longest row. Cats have 2 circles, the shortest row.

Dogs have the most. Cats have the fewest.

8 Order the ribbons ★★★

Pink is 4 cubes, green is 5 cubes and blue is 7 cubes. We have \(4 < 5 < 7\).

From shortest to longest: pink, green, blue.

9 Paper clip measure ★★★

Take the small number from the large one: \(8 - 5 = 3\).

The marker is 3 paper clips longer than the pencil.

10 Sort the toys ★★★

Cars: 4. Blocks: 6. Dolls: 2.

The biggest group is the blocks (6). The smallest group is the dolls (2).

11 Fewest to most ★★★

Pears: 4. Plums: 5. Apples: 6. We have \(4 < 5 < 6\).

From fewest to most: pears, plums, apples.

12 Make a picture graph ★★★

Draw 3 circles in the sunny row, 3 in the cloudy row and 1 in the rainy row.

Weather this weekSunnyCloudyRainyEach circle = 1 child

Rainy days happened the least: only 1.

13 True or false? ★★★

The sentence is false. Length and weight are different attributes. A short brick is heavier than a long feather.

14 How many more? ★★★

\(7 - 4 = 3\).

There are 3 more red cars than blue cars.

15 Three towers puzzle ★★★

Ana is taller than Ben, and Ben is taller than Cy. So Ana is taller than Cy too.

The tallest tower is Ana’s and the shortest is Cy’s.

From shortest to tallest: Cy, Ben, Ana.

16 Find the missing count ★★★

Soccer and swimming together: \(4 + 6 = 10\).

Art: \(15 - 10 = 5\). 5 children chose art.

17 Toy box data ★★★

  1. \(5 + 4 + 3 = 12\) toys.
  2. \(5 - 3 = 2\) more cars than blocks.
  3. Blocks (3) are fewer than balls (4).

18 Where does it start? ★★★

Stick A starts at 0 and ends at 6: \(6 - 0 = 6\) cubes.

Stick B starts at 2 and ends at 7: \(7 - 2 = 5\) cubes.

Stick B ends farther, but it is not longer. Stick A is longer by 1 cube.

19 Sort in two ways ★★★

By color: red \(2 + 3 = 5\), blue \(1 + 2 = 3\).

By shape: circles \(2 + 2 = 4\), squares \(3 + 1 = 4\).

Each time the total is 8, so no shape was lost.

20 Heavy chain ★★★

A is heavier than B, and B is heavier than C. So the order from lightest to heaviest is C, B, A.

No. Box C is the lightest, so it is not heavier than box A.

21 Graph detective ★★★

  1. \(6 + 3 + 5 + 2 = 16\) children.
  2. \(6 - 2 = 4\) more.
  3. \(5 - 3 = 2\) fewer.
